NYC has more than ONE MILLION independent voters who can’t vote in June Primary Elections.

IT'S UNFAIR.

All voters should be able to vote throughout the full election process. Unite NY is working to institute an all voter Open Primary in New York City.

Our plan advances practical reforms that expand participation, increase competition, and make government more accountable to the people it serves.

The Plan: All Voters, All Candidates, 1 Ballot

Here's how it works:

1. One Ballot

  • All candidates, from all parties, are on the same June election ballot.
  • Their party affiliation is listed next to their name.
  • All registered voters can vote.
  • Voters rank their preferred candidates using the existing ranked choice voting system.

2. Top Vote-getters move on

The Top-3 candidates with the most votes move on to the November election using Ranked Choice Voting.

3. Majority Rules

In the November election the winner is determined by receiving a majority of votes using Ranked Choice Voting.

The Benefits:

The NYC Campaign advances a package of practical reforms designed to make New York City's political system more open, competitive, and accountable. By expanding participation, increasing voter choice, encouraging greater competition, and strengthening accountability, these reforms would help ensure that government is more responsive to the people it serves.
